Hi Lawrence, thanks for the comment! You raise some good points. However, I didn't mean to say that Textpattern is outdated. Rather, it was my one-year-old redesign that was outdated. It could have been running on WordPress, and I would be saying the same thing.

Having said that, it's true I feel like I sort of need more out of my blogging platform. WordPress has a nice admin interface, has a good image uploader that supports multiple image sizes, and does custom post types. One thing I really miss about Textpattern is the concept of "sections" and complete control over markup (with WP it takes a bit of wrangling, but it's still possible). But like I said, it's not about the tools we use. Textpattern is still a solid platform, I simply felt like I needed something else. I'm already doing plenty of WordPress work, so it just seemed like a logical step.

Regarding smartphones and tablets: you'll notice that my site is now responsive. This is done mainly through CSS (with a tiny bit of JS help for IE), and is completely independent of my CMS -- which I think should be the case, anyway.

I know exactly how you feel about PHP, which was also why I started out using Textpattern. But once I started working with WordPress templates I got more comfortable with it. I'm sure you'll be able to pick it up.

You mention smartphones and tablets in your first paragraph, so I was wondering whether WP is a better option to deliver sites that work on these devices too?

With textpattern you can create as many templates for the same content you wish as the designer has 100% control over what code is outputted, including using a whole bunch of easy-to-se tags to define dynamic stuff (great for those who don't code PHP). So it's unfair to say that Textpattern is 'outdated'.

I'm not sure how you can achieve this in WP unless using themes and plugins perhaps? I've stayed away from WP because I don't have any PHP skills.

Good luck with your blog :)

Hi David,
thanks for the link. I know Steffen's site quite well but I must have missed this very interesting article. A lot of truth in it.

Hi Marco,

Yeah, it's really disheartening, but I would agree with <a href="http://www.learn-cocos2d.com/2010/05/ignore-everything-youve-heard-about-app-store-piracy" rel="nofollow">Steffen's post about piracy</a>: they will never pay for your game anyway. There are still plenty of people willing to pay for your game, and it's up to us to reach them.

Hi David,
thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts. Very interesting to read. But it's really alarming that about 90 percent of your users use the pirated version! I really didn't know it's that much. I'm about to write my first iPhone game, too. But when I read something like this it's really kinda disillusioning.

By the way: Congrats! Balloon Ride looks great!

Thanks again.

I wish I could play this game. No game system as of yet, but I have always loved the Grand Theft Auto Series from Rockstar and I knew this one would be solid.

Seems like Rockstar Games is on a roll. I’ll have to check out Read Dead Redemption, it’s great to finally see some Old West themed games come to fruition.

It got a little repetitive and slow at times, but what got me coming back was that I actually cared about what happens to John Marston.

I’m taking a few years off the web industry after I had my tenth anniversary in June so I can focus on photography and travelling instead. But it’s great to see that you’ve broken away from the 9-5 and become a freelancer; I’ll be sure to forward any RFPs your way.

Thanks for the compliments David and I’ve already updated Google Reader to reflect your new URL so I look forward to seeing what you have in store for your blog.

Best of luck!
